Standalone Balance Board

Design Challenge

Design a product which will help people gain an increased sense of self-sufficiency and life control, suitable for use by people living in household circumstances. 


Primary Demographics: Senior Citizens

Problem

Difficulties getting appropriate amount of exercise. 


Sub-problems:

Senior exercise is complicated by:

  • Risk of falling
  • Limited mobility
  • Health complications (notably heart and lung)
  • Lack of social support

Secondary Research

Seniors struggle to maintain social engagement because of complications around mobility and transportation

  • ~25% of seniors don’t drive
  • ~74% drive infrequently because of physical ailments & heightened medication use
  • ~58% rely on family or friends

Risk of falling is very low while using a walking stick, and the risk increased to a moderate level when not using a walking stick.

Standalone is a two part fall prevention product solution. Consisting of a portable balance board integrated with a digital application, Standalone is designed to help users train their balance and strengthen proper muscle groups to maintain and improve walking confidence and habits.

Product Brief

The balance board primary function is to track user exercises through integrated load sensors. There are four load sensors built into the board—one to measure pressure from the front and back of each foot. With these sensors, the board can determine statistics about center of gravity, stance width, weight distribution, and current exercises. These sensors flow into an integrated circuit (IC) which sends the information to the digital application via a bluetooth connection.
